When November becomes Movember in Australia – are you a MO bro?

We have just said goodbye to a good friend from the Netherlands who popped into Melbourne for a few days on his way to Bali to visit us.   During his stay he people watched like mad and finally decided to tell us what had fascinated him so much.   Is there a new fashion in Melbourne for facial hair?  he asked as apparently he was wondering at sudden sprouting of moustaches on a large majority of Melburnians male visages.  Movember obviously has not made such an impact in his area of the Netherlands!.

So here is some information on the reason why Australian males try their hand sporting a handlebar in the month of November (taken from the Prostate Cancer Association of Australia)

During November each year, Movember is responsible for the sprouting of moustaches of thousands of men’s faces in Australia and around the world. The aim of which is to raise vital funds and awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and depression in men.

On Movember 1st, guys register at Movember.com with a clean-shaven face and then for the rest of the month, these selfless and generous men, known as Mo Bros, groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery. Supported by the women in their lives, Mo Sistas, Movember Mo Bros raise funds by seeking out sponsorship for their Mo growing efforts.

Mo Bros effectively become walking, talking billboards for the 30 days of November and through their actions and words raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health.

At the end of the month, Mo Bros and their female supporters (known as Mo Sistas) celebrate their gallantry and valor by either throwing their own Movember party or attending one of the infamous Gala Partés held around the world by Movember, for Movember.

Money raised in Australia is shared equally between programs targeting prostate cancer and male depression. Funds go to Movember’s men’s health partners, the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia and beyondblue: the national depression initiative and the Movember Foundation. Together, the three channels work to ensure that Movember funds are supporting a broad range of innovative, world class programs in line with our strategic goals, in the areas of awareness, research, survivorship and education.

This year, 2012, will be Movember’s ninth year. Since inception, Movember has continued to grow each year, both in terms of participation numbers and funds raised. In its first year, 30 Mo Bros took part and last year, in Australia alone, over 130, 000 Mo Bro & Sistas got on board, raising more than $26 million.

Having been started by mates in Australia, Movember now takes place around the world. Motivated and inspired by what was happening in Australia, a further nine countries- New Zealand, USA, Canada, UK, Finland, the Netherlands, Spain, South Africa and  Ireland – now embrace the Mo in an official capacity each November. In addition, Movember is aware of Mo Bros & Sistas supporting the cause right across the globe, from Russia to Dubai, Hong Kong to Denmark and everywhere in between.

Big steps have been taken towards changing attitudes and habits relating to men’s health around the world but there is still much to be done to catch up with the women’s health movement. Via the moustache, Movember aims to fulfil its vision of having an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health, by continuing to provoke conversation each year.

What a wonderful and fun idea

Are you a Mo Bro or a Mo Sista?  Any photos to share?

  1. Aaron has done it a couple of times (including this year). Mostly I think he just does it cos he gets to have facial hair for a month – I don’t like it so “encourage” him otherwise the rest of the year. Luckily my birthday is December 1st, so I always ask for a clean shaven husband as a birthday present!

  2. My husband is a Mo Bro! (We’re in the States.) He swears he’s shaving off his ‘stache at 12:00am precisely on December 1st, but I have to say, it’s sort of grown on me.

  3. Massive thumbs up. All the women in my family are participating. We’ve tossed our bottles of Nair out the window. No waxing, shaving or tweezing until December. Yes, we’ve frightened away a lot of men, but it’s for such a good cause.

  4. fantastic!! I never knew this existed, but had noticed these Movember banners on people’s blogs and was wondering what it was, I thought it was a new “urban” word for November, didn’t know about all this cancer awareness month, what a great idea!

I wold love to hear your thoughts on this post.
